GERMANY–RUSSIA AT THE UN: AN IMPORTANT DIPLOMATIC SIGNAL

This was the first meeting between the German and Russian foreign ministers since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

GERMANY–RUSSIA AT THE UN: AN IMPORTANT DIPLOMATIC SIGNAL

The meeting was largely focused on the war in Ukraine, security concerns and what Germany describes as Russian escalation towards Germany, Europe and NATO. Berlin also raised the importance of maintaining grain exports and energy access through the Black Sea.

A European and international dimension.

For Germany, maintaining a firm position towards Moscow does not necessarily mean closing all diplomatic channels. Dialogue does not automatically mean normalization. It can provide a channel to communicate, address security concerns and explore limited areas of de-escalation.

The meeting also highlights a broader international reality: confrontation and diplomacy can coexist. At a time of tensions over security, energy, food supplies and global governance, diplomatic channels remain important.

Why Africa should pay attention

The African dimension is particularly significant. Disruptions to grain, fertilizer and energy supplies linked to the war in Ukraine have consequences far beyond Europe. Food security has therefore become a geopolitical issue.

For African countries, the question is not simply Russia or Europe? It is how to work with multiple partners while defending their own interests: food security, energy, infrastructure, investment, access to markets and industrial development.

Russia and the European Union are both seeking stronger partnerships with Africa in areas such as energy, agriculture, infrastructure, trade and investment. This creates both competition and opportunities.

The African challenge: strategic autonomy.

The key question for Africa is: How can African countries engage with several global powers without becoming merely arenas for geopolitical competition?

Diversifying partnerships can create greater room for manoeuvre, but this requires strong institutions, bankable projects, effective diplomacy and better coordination between political and economic interests.

The Germany–Russia meeting should therefore not be presented as a diplomatic breakthrough. But it shows that even countries with profound disagreements still need channels of communication.

And for Africa, the message is clear: Africa should not only observe these global realignments. It should negotiate, propose and pursue its own strategic priorities.
